20th Anniversary of PI Day
Friday, March 14
3/14 1:59pm
(It's also Einstein's birthday!)
What is PI?
------------
PI is a mathematical constant and one of the class of irrational numbers, meaning it's fractional decimal expansion is infinite. It represents the the ratio of any circle's circumference to its diameter in Euclidian Geometry. The number is PI, 3.1415926535...ad infinitum.
So what IS PI Day?
---------------------
PI Day is an international "geek" holiday that originally started at San Francisco's Exploratorium 20 years ago by Exploratorium physicist Larry Shaw. It has now become a Geek celebration all over the world. So every March 14th (ie, 3.14) ending at 1:59 (OK we fudged, but it's in the afternoon) is the time. In honor of this special number. People sing PI Day songs, bead a PI string (a physical manifestation of the never ending value of PI), and circumnavigate a PI shrine. And by the way, it's also Albert Einstein's birthday!
In Second Life these celebrations take place at:
'Splo Museum, Sploland (183, 78, 26)
'Splo Museum, Midnight City (177, 54, 26)
Exploratorium, Exploratorium (144, 120, 21)
Things in Second Life are a bit different, but we have a film of famous Pie fights, rides, activities and just plain Second Life fun. Oh - and the Second Life activities are also shown on monitors throughout the Exploratorium in Real Life.
